IT IS WELL THIS GOOD FRIDAY

I was listening to the classic hymn, It Is Well on this Good Friday. This day in history is when Jesus was nailed to the cross and died for the payment of our sin. I began to choke up as I heard these words,

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought,
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul.

Why is it well with my soul?

For starters, I have recognized that the greatest disturbance to my peace and soul is my sin and the sin of mankind. Yet, God took care of it for me.

The apostle Paul wrote, “For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

I know sin, I’ve committed too much of it over the span of my life. I am always humbled how Jesus, the one who knew no sin would take upon himself, all of our sin, so that we could be purified and blameless before God.

Secondly, while on the cross, Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." We know that Jesus and God are One (John 5:9; 10:38; 12:49; 14:8-11). Therefore, anything Jesus desires is what His Father desires as well. We can be sure that it was God’s desire to forgive us. If we need a more obvious scripture to prove that point I can think of John 3:16. Nevertheless, through faith in Christ on the cross we receive the pardon and forgiveness for our sin. We can be sure of this promise.

Finally, it is well with my soul because of who died on the cross, the perfect lamb, the most sufficient sacrifice, the son of God and His name is Jesus. When I was a kid, I put my trust in what Jesus did for me over 2000 years ago, and my trust remains in Him, alone. (Colossians 1:22-23).

Besides, is there any other lamb or sacrifice worthy of this great trust? The apostle Peter would say no… “There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

This is why I have peace in my heart, this is why It Is Well with my soul, Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, Oh my soul!
