AFTER THE SERMON-Who Are You Following?
We trust today’s message encouraged and guided you in your journey of following Jesus. These notes are meant to help you remember and reflect on the message, help you go deeper into study on the subject, or to be used for a Bible/sermon group study. Enjoy!
Sermon Title: Who Are You Following?
Main Scripture: Luke 9:51-56
Other scripture mentioned: John 3:17
(If you’re going through this discussion with a community group this week consider taking the time to read or paraphrase through some of the provided scripture to catch everyone up!)
Summary:
Who are you following this year? Who is leading your life? Who’s teaching you how to live, what to think, how to treat others, and what to focus on? It’s a new year, so where are we headed? Do we have a plan or vision for who we want to become and where to go? Pastor Ryan urged us to follow Jesus and he used a scripture we all probably didn’t expect. James and John wanted to burn up a Samaritan village for their lack of hospitality and unwelcoming spirit to Jesus. However, Jesus rebuked James and John for that reaction and showed them how to handle an altercation. Today’s sermon was a critical reminder that we need Jesus to lead us. It matters how we treat our enemies and represent God to the world. God’s mission on earth is still His focus and we the church need to remember and keep it that way. May we all be careful to choose Jesus as our leader, showing us the way to live, love and lead others in 2021.
Takeaways:
Follow the Spirit of God not the spirit of man.
We need Jesus to correct our ways when we get a little crazy.
I would rather be rebuked by Jesus than praised for going with the ways of man.
Follow the mercy of God not the offense of man.
God will deliver justice in His time. While we have time, let’s deliver the good news of forgiveness and eternal life.
Follow the mission of God not the ambition of man.
We’re here to build and expand the Kingdom of God, not the kingdom of man or the kingdom of America.
The world will not change by force but by the truth of Jesus, delivered in the spirit of love.

Pray:
Heavenly Father, we thank you for your Word, your guidance, and the example of your Son. We admit we would have done messed up things if it wasn’t for your mercy, grace, and correction. We give up the steering wheel of our lives this year and submit to you being the leader and driver of our lives. Teach us how to live, how to love, and how to lead others to the family of God. Thank you for your love and faithfulness, in Jesus name we pray, amen!
We hoped you found this AFTER THE SERMON discussion helpful for your walk with Jesus. We pray you can find ways to apply it this week!
